Any welder will tell you, no matter how good of a welder you are, you will always need to smooth out some welds. Its just one of those things that comes with the job. This is specially case when working on anything ornamental projects, like railings or furniture.
The Absolute must have finishing tools for every home welder are flap discs (sanding discs). These little discs are the most amazing attachments for your angle grinder. Whether you need to grind down an excess weld or just smooth out the edges of a freshly cut piece of metal, flap discs will handle the job.
In this post
I’m going to show you how to quickly attach a flap disc and how to use it to get rid of any edges, excess weld, and spatter.
Take Action
Use your grinder with the flap disc attached and practice grinding the edges of some scrap pieces.
Northern Tool has good flap discs at good prices. (I usually go with the 3 pack)
Why? You don’t have to use a lot of pressure when using flap discs. So you need to practice a little to know how much strength is too little or too much. Too little, and your wasting time and over heating your grinder. Too much, and you’ll start to dig into the metal leaving an unwanted crater.

Hi Mary, Thanks so much! I’m glad you liked it. I’ve only begun to start posting. I hope you enjoy the rest : )
Andy,
Upon your recommendation, I purchased a 60 grit flap disc. I wish I would have bought one sooner! Awesome stuff. I am going back to buy an assortment of different grit disc when time allows.
Thanks,
John
