About Me

I want to explain a few things to you about The At Home Welder before we get into the juicy details of who I am, who I’ve been, and who I’m striving to be.

Feel free to skip to the bottom if you’re impatient, but make sure you come up and read this next part. It’s very important that you understand a few simple things about The At Home Welder.

About The At Home Welder

The At Home Welder is for you

FIRST and foremost - The At Home Welder is for YOU. The entire concept of this site was born from the countless hours I’ve spent teaching, coaching, & supporting, MANY people just like you, learn how to weld and build profitable businesses.

The At Home Welder is a business

SECOND - The At Home Welder is a part of a business. Which means that this site will always generate some type of income. That’s what businesses do. However, that will NEVER take away from the main goal of this site which is to help many people fulfill their dream of a prosperous business and a life filled with enriching relationships.

That fact that I offer services or a product here will piss a lot of people off. They’ll say something like “You’re just trying to fatten your own bank account. If you really wanted to help so much you’d do it for free.” I’m totally fine with that. If you’re one of those people, you know where the back button is in the top left corner, right? Feel free to use it – now.

The fact is, I DO give most of my time for free. Creating content, recording videos, and responding to your questions take a lot of time and energy. I could just spit out quick two sentence answers, but that’s just not how I roll. I love helping out as much as I can. It’s what inspired The At Home Welder and I wouldn’t change a thing. But I’m also on my own journey to build a profitable business and offering my close personal services and products is part of the path I’ve created to do so.

Not to long ago I was scared. I had zero confidence, and I was wandering around like a zombie drone. I put on a great front and very few people, if any, knew what was really going on inside my head. Hell, I’d been going at the same pace for so long that I didn’t even know what was going on in there.

I was numb.

I wasn’t lonely. I was married to, literally, the girl of my dreams. I had great friends, and loving family. Even my in-laws were great. However, I was still prone to sudden and paralyzing panic attacks.

At the time, they scared the living shit out of me. I had no idea what a panic attack was. I literally thought I was losing my mind. My entire body would shake uncontrollably, my muscles would tense up so hard that it felt like they were going to rip out of my skin. My teeth would violently chatter and I could literally hear that short circuit sound going on in my mind. Seriously.

The Terrifying Test Results

So I got tested. My worried wife stood by my side while they put an insane amount of wires on my head and chest. I went to have an MRI (not helping with that short circuit feeling, btw).

The doctors diagnosis: Severe Panic Attacks

My diagnosis: You mean I’m doing this to myself? I’m killing myself?

Instantly, I had the most important realization of my life

Instantly, I had the most important realization of my entire life. I’m the one in control. Even though it seemed as if everything was spinning out of control, I was the one at the steering wheel. I was literally killing myself.

That was the day it all changed.

Today I’m a far different man from the one I was just four years ago. I’m still married to the girl of my dreams, have two amazingly beautiful little girls, a dog named Alice “The Wonder Dog”, and a cozy little home with a garden in the backyard.

We have ZERO credit cards and ZERO credit card debt (We’re very proud of this one).  I run my business from my home. I get to take my kids to school and even pick them up. My wife gets to do what she loves. She trains horses and coaches riding students to compete in horse shows. The barn is literally 2 minutes from our house.

I still get scared. My confidence still wanes from time to time, and I still screw a lot of things up when I try them.

But I’m AWAKE

I’m no longer a zombie drone wandering around in fear. I’m filled with passion and determination. I no longer believe the words my father used when he said, “No one cares about your story”. I’m no longer stuck in the prison of “you are your past” or “you are your genes”.

I’m awake and fully aware that I’m the one in control of my life.

A lot has happened since the day the doctors gave us the test results. I wrote about this in greater detail here, but here’s the short version.

I…

  • ran a fabrication business which was the largest supplier of hot water heater stands in the southeast
  • built an ornamental ironwork business from word of mouth
  • created an online welding tutorial business with digital courses
  • built my own e-commerce shopping sites and managed others
  • currently work with others who are ready to take control, build a thriving business and change their life

It’s kind of a strange transition. Especially since I went from barely being able to check my email to almost 100% of my business being online, in less than a year.

I love being able to build something amazing for my family while being able to impact the lives of so many other people. I can’t think of a better way to teach my daughters about business and life. If you would’ve told me five years ago that this is what I’d be doing, I would’ve laughed at you and then walked away with my head low.

Every day I strive to reach my own thriving destination by helping many people reach theirs

Every day I strive to be the best husband and father I can be. I’ve realized that the more I help others accomplish their goals and change their lives, I become a stronger example for my girls to live by. And the love and appreciation I have for my wife grows even more.

My motives might seem selfish, but they are what they are. If helping others to help yourself is considered a selfish way to live then I’m going to continue rock’n my selfish lifestyle. :-)

Oh yeah, and those panic attacks…  I never had another one after that day.

Here’s what you should do now

This site is about you and for you. If you have a minute I’d love for you to go to the comments and share a little of your “about” story too.

I’m looking forward to the crazy road ahead and I’m glad you’re here to be a part of it.

I have twenty plus years in the security iron biz (wire partitions, swing doors, slide doors, folding gates). The company sold two years ago, and half the shop was let go. I’m currently in a nowhere job. I’m now starting to work on getting my ornamental iron going also. I just now ran across your web site from seeing your vids on youtube. You could be an inspiration to a guy like me and others. Thanks

Thanks so much.
I completely understand and folks like yourself are the reason I do this.
I can’t wait to see what you’ve got in store for your future.
Please keep me up to date on your progress and let me know if you have any questions about anything.

On September 29, 2009 I praised you as being an inspiration to people like myself and others. As time has gone by it turns out that you are selling info that anyone can find for free on sites like ArtMetal and other community forums. Now I’ve come to the conclusion that you designed this site to help yourself and no one else. I’m betting you delete this so no body sees it. If you can’t get enough work for yourself in iron work to make money, then get a part time job until your work picks up. I don’t agree with your practices and think it’s a shame people like you are out there preying on others for their own personal gain.

Daniel,

You are absolutely correct about me wanting to make money from this site. This site (and anything else that I create) is a form of my business, and it is naive to think that I don’t want to make money with my business. If I wanted a job I would go get one. However, I choose to run my business like, well you know, like a business so I don’t have to work for someone else.

I’m curious as to the sudden change of heart against me and the content that I’ve spent hundreds of hours to create. Yes, it’s true that a lot of the content I put out can be found in some way or another online somewhere. So can just about anything else you want to know. There is no new welding technique that I’ve invented that’s going to change the industry. That’s not what this site is about. This is, and alway has been, for the normal guy that wants to learn the basics of welding.

In all of the 73 posts and 26 videos only 4 of them have mentioned anything about buying a course that I offer. EVERY piece of content on this site has been 100% free with no obligation of any kind from you. I’m sure that there are tons of people in forums and other sites that have the same knowledge that I do about welding. That’s what makes the internet so great.

Do you not try to make money on your site Mazur’s Ornamental Iron Innovations with affiliate banners and adds? Do you not make things that anyone could learn how to make on YouTube? How’s is this different from my site, or any other site for that matter? How is creating hundreds of hours of free instructional content preying on others?

As far as I can see, you’ve haven’t purchased a course from me. How can you judge something that you know nothing about? Perhaps you’re angry that I’ve decided to charge $47 dollars for something instead of making everything totally free.

At any rate, I’m sorry that you feel the way you do. I’m sure you can continue to learn all you need from other sites and forums.

thanks for sharing your knowledge of welding on podcasts. i’m interested in building bikes with both steele and aircraft aluminum tubing. can i get by with something like this http://www.amazon.com/Hobart-500500-Handler-115-Volt-Single-Phase/dp/B0002PS7SA/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=ILOCGDCQWIMY&colid=3EJ5ML0Y37CD1 or even something cheaper as i am a really tight budget but ok with paying for something of quality that will do the job right.

ps if you have an amazon link i could buy it through your link and you would get a percentage for all your referenced products…. good idea!

A lot of the free stuff on the internet is hard to find, poorly presented, hard to sort the good from the bad and lots of times just plain wrong. I don’t mind paying a moderate price for correct and well presented material, all of which I have seen in your YouTube videos.

Being unemployed can rot the soul and I hope Dan M gets his business up and running and learns to drop the bitterness. Attitude is everything when when running a business.

You helped me for free today in learning how to properly install a liner in an old MIG unit I am rebuilding.

I wish You the best with all Your business endeavors.

You know what… I like your honesty. You didn’t have to leave Daniel’s comment there but you did anyway.
I just stumbled on your site as I am looking to start a small welding shop for myself. Hopefully make a few bucks too. I did a night tech welding course a year ago. Introduction to welding (SMAW). It took 12 weeks of 3 hour classes and $400 later…
I probably learned nearly as much in you free video as I did in the tech college!!
Anyway I will probably be buying your course and seeing what you can show me, so thanks for your site, and why shouldn’t make money doing it too?
Cheers, Paul.

I was born genetically predisposed to cynicism. Being cynical has served me well throughout most of my life. However, it has also precluded me from receiving a few blessings over time.
Admittedly, there are people out in the internet world who do get taken advantage of in many ways but, let’s face it people. We have the God given talent of a healthy dose of skepticism and the ability to reason like none of God’s other creations.
Are there times when the ‘would be evil-doers’ need to get spanked and punished for their evil deeds? Yes. But, for cryin’ out loud. When do people, as individuals, stop blaming others for what goes on? Why don’t and can’t people use their God given talents to reason things out, examine, weigh and measure the risks associated with a given venture and hold themselves responsible for their choices.
Crikey, this is not Flip Wilson’s “da devil made me do it”, skit? This is real life. Take some responsibility for your own actions and choices. If you don’t want to buy it then, don’t. If you don’t want to watch or listen to it then, don’t. Change the freakin’ channel or station.
Free Will people. Exercise it a little bit and stop blaming others for the bad choices you make.
I’m pretty sure this forum wasn’t designed to be counter productive so, I’ll finish this rant. It was designed to be productive and thought provoking.
I’m certain that I’m here of my own volition. Noone is twisting my arm or putting a gun to my head. I’m a reasonably intelligent individual who believes in the free market society and capitalism so, until such time as I have had a negative experience with ‘At Home Welder’ then, I’m going to keep an open mind.
In the end, if I make a purchase of anything, it will only be done only after I have taken the time to examine all of the pros and cons. Either way, I know the choice is always mine. I will be responsible for my choices to do or not to do.

I have learned to weld this last year from my business partner who is a master fabricator with sheet metal.I also learned a lot from your site. I was a nuts and bolt guy,now I weld, fabricate brackets ,fenders oiltanks and am still mostly a nuts and bolt guy. We just sold our first rolling frame and have two more complete bikes on the way. Iam retiring this year from buses and subway operations and hope to be able to turn a hobby into a business. Don’t need a lot of $ just enough to get bywith. Oh yea, I was diagnosed with panic anxiety last January after a week in the hospital ward.So hang in there.

Hey Min-deeee, I jumped the gun on this site when I praised him and then when I started getting emails titled “Taking a beautiful lady out to dinner” and “I screwed up figuring my taxes” as a way to get money then I sent what you had read. Not to mention everything that is shown here I realised I already know. I sent him a comment on the screw up video of a better way to weld the gap using a brass piece for heat deflection or a cut filler piece both which would make it easier and quicker to repair. For that suggestion I was deleted and blocked from the comments section. Now for anyone who thinks I was wrong, so be it. You only know one side of the story so now let’s see if he’s a stand up guy and leaves this post here!

I just listened to a few of your welding podcasts. The three I listened to were full of incorrect information. Beginners who are willing to pay for an education deserve to be taught by someone who knows what they are doing.
