Man that's awesome. Where did you get the latches and hinges for the doors. And did you weld the top (or side) lid shut or are you using a ring? I think the only thing you didn't think of was a smoke stack to let the smoke out more effeciently

I own a 180-C Lincoln mig welder works very well, I have been practicing on an old trailer I'm rebuilding. The question is how do you know you have a good weld if the thickness are different, also how do you weld upside down you can't turn somethings over. I tried to weld and the weld wanted to drip, I spot welded but it looked poor. I have been checking the web sights but there are no answers. Two finale questions first when do you know when to change tips, cones wire guides . second I have difficulty setting the machine up with the guide in the inside cover when you are changing thickness of metal I can't tell if I have a good weld. The speed and power go up with thickness.... Stan

That is by far one of the best grills I have seen. And it is the perfect size for a super large cast iron grill plate that I had picked up for the single can version. I definitely want to build one. Any chance on those CAD templates others have asked for?

Excellent Video. Is there a particular marking on the grinding disk to look for for general cutting and grinding? I am looking for any and all suggestions. Can you make a video about using a 4.5" grinder safely. I have seen them used but have little to no experience.

Keep up the great work!
Thanks

I can use this article to finish my assignment inside the school, and it has similar topic like your document. Thank you, great share.

Hey Min-deeee, I jumped the gun on this site when I praised him and then when I started getting emails titled "Taking a beautiful lady out to dinner" and "I screwed up figuring my taxes" as a way to get money then I sent what you had read. Not to mention everything that is shown here I realised I already know. I sent him a comment on the screw up video of a better way to weld the gap using a brass piece for heat deflection or a cut filler piece both which would make it easier and quicker to repair. For that suggestion I was deleted and blocked from the comments section. Now for anyone who thinks I was wrong, so be it. You only know one side of the story so now let's see if he's a stand up guy and leaves this post here!

um... when using a MIG/TIG the gas is not burning it is conducting, so Mixed Gas is less conductive so it is not as effective. Also CO2 is much dirtier then Argon, and other Gases. Next Argon, and CO2 are not flammable they are as you have stated before inert, Thus there is no flame but a large electrical arc. Furthormore Flux is not a gas when applied but turns to gas when melted/heated.

I have Northern Tool 175-amp Mig Welder. According to the manual, I can use up to .045 wire in it. I've been using .030 wire in it. I bought some .035 wire the other day and as I began to get ready to install it, I saw a note in the wire feed assembly area that said that using wire from .035 to .045 would require a different sleeve (aka liner) can you tell me where I might get another liner or would you try to use the liner that I've been using for the .030 wire?

Thanks

Andy,

Where I live we have some big home improvement stores and a place to buy steel, but both can get pretty expensive. Where is the best place to find cheaper metal or even good scrap metal? What do you think?

Also I've heard you talk about oxy/acetylene torches, but what about plasma torches? You ever use those? Thanks again for the great site and all the help!

Hey Andy,

I just wanted to say that I really appreciate the time and effort that you put into this website and the guidance that you provide other welders out there. I grew up around a welder, but never had the opportunity to really learn. I will be getting a welder soon and intend on practicing and trying to use it to my profit. From your subscription email that I got, I noticed that you aren't that far from me. I'm in the FT Benning, Columbus GA. My brother lives in the Smyrna area too. Again, I appreciate your effort for this.

I just bought a drum that contained alcohol based soup with low viscosity. Is this drum good to use if burned out well?

Hi,
My question is that I am having a hard time seeing the work that I am welding. I am using one of those inexpensive auto darkinging helmets set to the lightest setting. I have tried making adjustments to the darker but that only makes it worse. Any sugestions would be helpful.
P.S.
Yes, I just had my eyes checked!

Thanks,
Dan

I have learned to weld this last year from my business partner who is a master fabricator with sheet metal.I also learned a lot from your site. I was a nuts and bolt guy,now I weld, fabricate brackets ,fenders oiltanks and am still mostly a nuts and bolt guy. We just sold our first rolling frame and have two more complete bikes on the way. Iam retiring this year from buses and subway operations and hope to be able to turn a hobby into a business. Don't need a lot of $ just enough to get bywith. Oh yea, I was diagnosed with panic anxiety last January after a week in the hospital ward.So hang in there.

I was born genetically predisposed to cynicism. Being cynical has served me well throughout most of my life. However, it has also precluded me from receiving a few blessings over time.
Admittedly, there are people out in the internet world who do get taken advantage of in many ways but, let's face it people. We have the God given talent of a healthy dose of skepticism and the ability to reason like none of God's other creations.
Are there times when the 'would be evil-doers' need to get spanked and punished for their evil deeds? Yes. But, for cryin' out loud. When do people, as individuals, stop blaming others for what goes on? Why don't and can't people use their God given talents to reason things out, examine, weigh and measure the risks associated with a given venture and hold themselves responsible for their choices.
Crikey, this is not Flip Wilson's "da devil made me do it", skit? This is real life. Take some responsibility for your own actions and choices. If you don't want to buy it then, don't. If you don't want to watch or listen to it then, don't. Change the freakin' channel or station.
Free Will people. Exercise it a little bit and stop blaming others for the bad choices you make.
I'm pretty sure this forum wasn't designed to be counter productive so, I'll finish this rant. It was designed to be productive and thought provoking.
I'm certain that I'm here of my own volition. Noone is twisting my arm or putting a gun to my head. I'm a reasonably intelligent individual who believes in the free market society and capitalism so, until such time as I have had a negative experience with 'At Home Welder' then, I'm going to keep an open mind.
In the end, if I make a purchase of anything, it will only be done only after I have taken the time to examine all of the pros and cons. Either way, I know the choice is always mine. I will be responsible for my choices to do or not to do.

You know what... I like your honesty. You didn't have to leave Daniel's comment there but you did anyway.
I just stumbled on your site as I am looking to start a small welding shop for myself. Hopefully make a few bucks too. I did a night tech welding course a year ago. Introduction to welding (SMAW). It took 12 weeks of 3 hour classes and $400 later...
I probably learned nearly as much in you free video as I did in the tech college!!
Anyway I will probably be buying your course and seeing what you can show me, so thanks for your site, and why shouldn't make money doing it too?
Cheers, Paul.

A lot of the free stuff on the internet is hard to find, poorly presented, hard to sort the good from the bad and lots of times just plain wrong. I don't mind paying a moderate price for correct and well presented material, all of which I have seen in your YouTube videos.

Being unemployed can rot the soul and I hope Dan M gets his business up and running and learns to drop the bitterness. Attitude is everything when when running a business.

You helped me for free today in learning how to properly install a liner in an old MIG unit I am rebuilding.

I wish You the best with all Your business endeavors.

thanks for sharing your knowledge of welding on podcasts. i'm interested in building bikes with both steele and aircraft aluminum tubing. can i get by with something like this http://www.amazon.com/Hobart-500500-Handler-115-Volt-Single-Phase/dp/B0002PS7SA/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=ILOCGDCQWIMY&colid=3EJ5ML0Y37CD1 or even something cheaper as i am a really tight budget but ok with paying for something of quality that will do the job right.

ps if you have an amazon link i could buy it through your link and you would get a percentage for all your referenced products.... good idea!

Daniel,

You are absolutely correct about me wanting to make money from this site. This site (and anything else that I create) is a form of my business, and it is naive to think that I don't want to make money with my business. If I wanted a job I would go get one. However, I choose to run my business like, well you know, like a business so I don't have to work for someone else.

I'm curious as to the sudden change of heart against me and the content that I've spent hundreds of hours to create. Yes, it's true that a lot of the content I put out can be found in some way or another online somewhere. So can just about anything else you want to know. There is no new welding technique that I've invented that's going to change the industry. That's not what this site is about. This is, and alway has been, for the normal guy that wants to learn the basics of welding.

In all of the 73 posts and 26 videos only 4 of them have mentioned anything about buying a course that I offer. EVERY piece of content on this site has been 100% free with no obligation of any kind from you. I'm sure that there are tons of people in forums and other sites that have the same knowledge that I do about welding. That's what makes the internet so great.

Do you not try to make money on your site Mazur's Ornamental Iron Innovations with affiliate banners and adds? Do you not make things that anyone could learn how to make on YouTube? How's is this different from my site, or any other site for that matter? How is creating hundreds of hours of free instructional content preying on others?

As far as I can see, you've haven't purchased a course from me. How can you judge something that you know nothing about? Perhaps you're angry that I've decided to charge $47 dollars for something instead of making everything totally free.

At any rate, I'm sorry that you feel the way you do. I'm sure you can continue to learn all you need from other sites and forums.

On September 29, 2009 I praised you as being an inspiration to people like myself and others. As time has gone by it turns out that you are selling info that anyone can find for free on sites like ArtMetal and other community forums. Now I've come to the conclusion that you designed this site to help yourself and no one else. I'm betting you delete this so no body sees it. If you can't get enough work for yourself in iron work to make money, then get a part time job until your work picks up. I don't agree with your practices and think it's a shame people like you are out there preying on others for their own personal gain.

That was a really good webinar! A lot of people don't cover this and yeah it can be some nasty stuff! Personally I have gotten a little sick but since I weld for a living we always have top of the line respirators and air supplies when needed. This also applies to TIG welding stainless steel.

Just a FYI I just caught an article about the dangers of welding over brake cleaner. Deadly!

Hi Mike,

It should work out fine. I've actually done the same thing. It was smaller trailer though. Make sure you have a good ground and clean metal so you can get enough penetration. If you have access to a larger unit, I would use it just to be safe. But I have built several trailers with smaller units.

Hi, Andy. Really enjoy your web site. Want to build a trailer frame from 2x2x.120 steel tube and 2x2x.120 angle stock. Will one of the smaller 110 / 120 units work for that kind of project or do I need a 220 volt unit?

Hi Andy,
Can you weld the down rails from the inside of the channel to make it look tidy or would that lead to problems later?

Thank you.

Hi Chip,

The big problem with older twisted bar is that it hardly ever matches up with the new stuff. Much of the older bar was actually done by hand in smaller pieces. Now days you can buy 20' sticks of the stuff that were twisted at the mill. I wish I had a better answer for you, but this is something that I deal with all the time.

hey there and thanks for the post - I've most definately learned something interesting from here. I did however have a few technical problems with this blog, because I needed to refresh the page several times before I could get it to load properly. I was wondering if your hosting is adequate for your needs? Not that I am complaining, but slow loading times will sometimes lower your position in the search engines and can damage your quality score if using Adwords. Anyhow I'm going to add your RSS feed to my email and will look out for more of your informative posts. Please update this again sometime soon...

I need to build some railing to match some that I already got (at the junk yard). It is 1/2" bar, but every other bar is twisted. Do you know where the twisted bar might be available? Most of the ones that I found on the net are twisted at a different pitch than what I have. Also, can you buy the punched channel already made or is that a blacksmith job? Thanks!

Hi Daniel,

I recommend that you go with the Handler 140. Both machines are very solid but the 140 will allow you to get much better penetration on thicker materials. I use a Hobart 140 at our barn too. I've fixed different tractor implements and all sorts of other stuff quickly and effectively. I wouldn't trust it as a long term fix for larger tractor parts, but it will definitely work in a pinch.

I'm new to welding and really appreciate your site & info. I'm looking to purchase one of the Hobart MIGs. The "Hobart 500550 Auto Arc 130 Wire Feed MIG Welding Kit with Welder, Helmet, Regulator, and Cart" goes for $370 and the "Hobart 500542 Handler 140 Amp 115 Volt Wire Feed MIG Welder" goes for $580. I don't mind the extra $210, but is it worth it? I have a hobby ranch where a welder could be useful in a thousand situations, so I cannot tell you exactly what I'll be doing with it most of the time. It seems every tool I ever buy I test its maximum limit immediately and sometimes I wish I had gone bigger/more expensive. What's the difference here?

Thanks,

Hi.

I am in the market for a new cutting and welding torch set. I do ½ cutting. Maybe 3/4 in the future. So far I have looked into Victor and Smith. I like Smith because the mixing takes place in the tip with the understanding that it is safer. But what I am asking is if you were going to go out and buy a new torch set, what brand, design would you go for.

Thanks.

A good video, I've been thinking about which type of welder to get for some time. Your video covers all of the points that other people have mentioned, size of weld, tidyness, different materials, cost, speed.

One thing to add is when buying a TIG welder, it might not come with a torch and that can add quite a lot onto the price.

Andy,

Sorry to hear about the Galvanic poisoning incident. It is a real threat. I got a touch of that stuff awhile back. Bad headaches and a serious sinus infection. Serious sheet! Yes, I had two fans blowing the fumes away from me. Still did not help.

If any of the AHW community need to weld on galvanized material, heed Andy's warning!

BTW, is a webinar like a video conference call?

Hey Jason,
I've gone both ways, but to be honest, I would use the galvanized pipe and grind away the area to be welded. It will save you a lot of time and probably a good bit of money. Not to mention the hassle of having to get everything galvanized after its pretty much built.

One thing to remember is to wear a good quality mask or make sure you are in a very well ventilated area. That galvanized stuff can give you a really bad headache. If you do end up getting a headache from it, drink a big glass of milk. It won't kill the headache but it will definitely help.

Thanks and send me some pics : )

I might have a railing job at a park that is about 200' of hand rail. I enjoy your podcast and look fwd to your answer. thanks

I have twenty plus years in the security iron biz (wire partitions, swing doors, slide doors, folding gates). The company sold two years ago, and half the shop was let go. I'm currently in a nowhere job. I'm now starting to work on getting my ornamental iron going also. I just now ran across your web site from seeing your vids on youtube. You could be an inspiration to a guy like me and others. Thanks

Andy,

Upon your recommendation, I purchased a 60 grit flap disc. I wish I would have bought one sooner! Awesome stuff. I am going back to buy an assortment of different grit disc when time allows.

Thanks,
